Conservation Biology is a new integrated science that seeks to study and protects biological diversity. It has three goals: (i) to document the full range of biological diversity on Earth; (ii) to investigate human impact on species, communities, and ecosystems; and (iii) to develop practical approaches to prevent the extinction of species, to maintain genetic variation within species, and to protect and restore communities and their environment.
The course provides the essentials of Conservation Biology, shortly describes biological diversity, its value and mainly its threats; further the course deals with biological principles of conservation at population, species and ecosystem levels, with management of protected areas and their surroundings, restoration of damaged ecosystems and endangered populations, sustainable development and with the integration of nature conservation into juridical, economic and social relationships.
